If you are looking for a way to improve your health, relax at home and add some excitement to your evenings, investing in a hot tub can be an excellent way to achieve this. With so many hot tubs for sale at a variety of prices and specifications it can be hard to know where to start and if you make the wrong choice you could be stuck with an unsuitable appliance for a long time. Here are some of the things to consider when buying a hot tub to ensure you get the one that best suits your needs.

Hot tubs come in a variety of depths, ranging from approximately 72cm up to 108cm. Taller people will have trouble getting comfortable in the shallower models, so consider who will be using your hot tub and go for a suitable depth for everyone. People who are six feet or taller will find that the 72cm models leave their knees pointing upwards and out of the water, so a deeper footwell will be needed to ensure their comfort.

There are also a variety of heaters available for hot tubs. These range from no heater at all, in which case the heat generated by the pumps is used to warm the water, up to a 3kW heater. The heater will warm the water to the required temperature whilst the cover is on, but once you remove the cover to use the hot tub, you will find the water quickly cools down if the heater is not adequate for the size of hot tub you have bought. Generally, the bigger the hot tub, the larger the heater is required.

Ozone generators are an optional extra, but definitely one that is worth a few extra pennies. These generators put bubbles of ozone into the water, which serve to neutralise any contamination in the water on contact. This helps to keep the water clear and clean for longer and reduces the amount of chemicals you need to use in the pool.

Other considerations ought to include the number, power rating and location of jets, which control the amount of water pumped into the tub. The best way to find out what suits you best is to ask for a ‘wet test’ of your potential pool. This way you can get an idea of what you prefer before you go ahead and make an investment.

Most consumers are aware of the bad news: during 2011, the six major British electricity providers raised their prices. Rises went from 4.5% to 15%, a clear burden to many households, given the current economic climate. What follows are three things you can do to pay the cheapest electricity bills.

1- Do your research. Do not assume that you are on the best tariff just because you got a good deal when you signed up with your current provider. Consumers who routinely use price comparison sites save an average of £200 per year, with some of them saving a whopping £340. It might be necessary to switch providers in order for you to get the cheapest electricity deal.

2- Learn to read your electricity meters. If you want to pay only for the electricity that you consume, do not take a gamble and wait until you receive an estimate. Make a point of learning to read your meter, and do it as soon as possible. There are at least six different types of meters in the market, so familiarise yourself with the model you own in order to provide accurate readings.

Also, do not forget that you can not only switch electricity providers, but also meter types. Nowadays, it is possible to learn online about the most common meter types and which type of consumer they suit best. A word of caution: “pay as you go” and prepaid meters are not always the solution to getting the cheapest rates. Once again, do your research at sites like these.

3- Set your home into energy-efficient mode. The domestic appliances that consume the most electricity are tumble dryers, dishwashers, and washing machines. If you are about to buy one of these pieces of equipment, purchase the most energy-efficient model. Additionally, consider replacing other appliances such as kettles, microwaves, and stoves with their energy-efficient versions.

The walls of a stairway often go under decorated, or badly decorated, each just as egregious as the last as far as I’m concerned. Maybe one framed work of art here, a mini collection of water coloured herbs, or what I refer to as the disorderly family album wall. You know the one, where the frames have never been updated from the very first frame they were put into twenty years ago. Leaving a massive disjointed blob on the wall. This is not to say I don’t like a good family photo wall, I simply detest the failure to attract kind.

Now, if you do not have the kind of art on the walls aligning your staircase you need not avoid the family photo collection, it can be achieved with success. In fact, it can be as interesting as the family itself, and as stylish as the rest of the house. Get it just right by setting out a grid, or pattern that your pictures should lie within. Place the images on top of white paper in the dimensions you would like to have the frames and attach them to the wall, where you propose to nail them, with tape. Then let some time pass, and allow yourself to take the scene in. Once you confirm you like the composition, then and only then go ahead with the framing process. Otherwise, you may find in the not so distant future you regret having rushed things.

Most of us cherish our homes, and the things that we carefully chose to fill them with from top to bottom. Yet, while we pay close attention to filling the home with our most valuable possessions, we are cavalier about how we obtain our home insurance coverage. Seems counter intuitive, but it continues to be a common occurrence. I have often wondered what the psychology is behind this chosen course and have come up with a couple of theories. In the end, the conclusion remains clear, that the insurance is of great importance, and should be handle as such.

When we first purchase a house, we are excited and eager to turn it into a special place for ourselves and our families. Some people plan for years how they will decorate each and every room. Others might leave the selections till the deal has been sealed. No matter which category we fall into, the act of picking out our sofas, tables, chairs, art, electronics and all the rest of it is one taken very seriously. Those articles will play a constant role in our world for the foreseeable future, and in many cases well beyond. They are a reflection of our preferences and our personalities, and a great deal of time and money is injected into the collection of our belongings.

Understandably, choosing the things we fill our homes with is a fun task. It is a part of getting the dream end result we hold near and dear. Whereas, obtaining insurance does not hold the same kind of appeal for most people. The thought of making decisions over how much coverage to request to protect our treasures makes us think about things we hope never to experience, loss. Plus, some companies make it more difficult to understand the options than it needs to be, so the activity of picking out the proper product becomes dreaded. But you know things happen, pipes burst, windows get broken, mirrors shatter, computers get knocked over, and when they do you will be thanking your lucky stars you took steps to make it simple to fix. You were smart about the purchase of your house and furnishing it, don’t drop the ball and foolishly miss this step.

If you are adult enough to buy a house, then you should be mature enough to protect it. Simply think how much you value your home and all it contains, and this should clarify how important it is to insure it. Then, should the unexpected take place, you are in the best possible position to address it. Locate a company that offers insurance for buildings and contents that makes your options clear as a bell. If you are searching online, make sure they have a telephone number, and use it if you have questions about accidental damage, or legal protection. It is critical that you feel comfortable with what you go with, and that you know you are in good hands. So make it more than just an afterthought, make it a priority. You will be doing yourself a service by protecting what you love.

One of my all time favourite directions from a professional interior decorator is one that makes superb sense on so many levels. Now, depending on how you go about it, it could get somewhat pricey, but there are many budget choices, so that makes it a winner right off the bat. Next, it actually brings a whole new level of cleanliness to the room it sits in, the bathroom, and finally, it has big impact for just one revision.

Think you have guessed it? Well more importantly have you done it? Trade the old toilet seats in your home for new ones. It is as simple as unbolting the old one from the rear of the base of the bowl itself. Just attach a new one just as quickly, and once you’ve seen how it came off, it will be self explanatory as to how it goes on. As you can imagine there are few variations on this, such as certain designs come with nuts that you can tighten with your fingers, but otherwise it is pretty much as straight forward as home improvements come these days.

I do feel the need to warn you against getting seats and covers with themes on them. Yes, I am afraid this goes for kid’s bathrooms too, even if you think it will motivate a little one to go in the potty. These seats and covers become unimpressive to children quite quickly as they age, and are even less appreciated by future potential buyers of your home when the time comes to sell.

Make the most of any light coming into your home by using white or cream coloured carpets to keep a bright feel in your life at any time of the year.

Ask any carpet expert and they’ll tell you that laying a very pale carpet can really light up the home. While magnifying and reflecting the sunshine in summer, a light carpet can also fill the home with light even when it’s dull and grey outside.

Cream may not always be your first choice for practical reasons as you may be worried that even the smallest specks of dirt may show up. But these days it’s possible to have a pale carpet that looks good, even in areas of the home with heavy foot traffic such as lounges or hallways.

Modern pale carpets are made from stain resistant fibres and are even able to be cleaned with bleach solutions. Surface dirt, such as mud and spills can be simply wiped away with a damp cloth. These man-made carpets are not only practical; they feel and look like wool. If you don’t believe us, get some carpet samples and see for yourself.

If you’re worried that a very pale carpet will appear too cold outside the spring and summer months, a great way to bring a little more warmth is by dressing it up with textured rugs in warm colours such as maroon, ochre or toupe. If rugs aren’t the right style for you, why not accessorise with some contemporary cushions to add a little spice to your furnishing scheme?

Remember decorating your home is all about your personal tastes, but with modern techniques you don’t have to change your style ideals. You can rest assured opting for a cream or pale carpet won’t cause you any unnecessary stress in the home. It will create both a stylish and functional look to your home; perfect for whatever season.

Though it is not a new trick of the trade, it is one people continue to ask for, including celebrities as is evidenced each tie we get a peak inside one. SO, what is this decorating phenom, mismatched dinning room chairs. An eclectic mix is something that really works when they are all painted the same colour. Once they have been unified in that way, go a step further and reupholster the seats in a coordinating material.

This works with chairs with arms, and without, with curvy backs and straight. It’s just one of those quirky things that appeals to all sorts of homeowners in all different financial brackets. Perhaps, for some it harkens back to simpler time, and for others it represents creativity. Whatever the reason, it appeals to a wide and varied audience.

On hint though, stick to chairs that have one common thread about them. For example steer clear of putting those with woven backs with solid ones. And completely upholstered ones with those with metal backs. This way, things feel less thrown together, and more intentional.

While you might not like the sound of it, or even the imagery that forms in your head when hearing it, we can all use a good corkboard and/or chalkboard in our homes. Some of us will go to great lengths to conceal it behind a door, or in a cupboard or even armoire, but there is another way to make it less eyesore, and more glamorous.

Find a lovely gold or silver picture frame, pop out the glass and insert a properly measured slab of cork or chalkboard inside of it. I know from years of experience how grand and impressive these can look. As a matter of fact, these used to be one of my favourite housewarming gifts. You can choose a frame to suit the personality of the individual, or family you are gifting it to, and know you hit on a good thing when their eyes light up with delight. But, don’t wait around for someone to show up at your door with one, good heavens no, for who could possibly select a more perfect frame for your home than you.

Since I was a child I have made pomanders, and have always admired their simple beauty. In addition, the fact they smell dreamy along with being so decorative is a bonus I never take for granted. Over the years I have honed my skills, and come up with some decorative spins on this traditional idea.

Still, I return to the basics often, as it reminds me of the holidays of my childhood, and those family members who are no longer around to share in the present ones.To make your own you will need very few items, just a bunch of oranges, a rubber band, wooden skewer, and cloves. Even before you get started the scent will begin to fill the air.

Place the rubber band around the orange to use as a guide for your rows. Use the skewer to poke holes along rubber band. Then insert the cloves one by one into the line of holes. Repeat. There are tons of decorative things you can do once they are complete, but I like to make a pyramid on a plate, over a bed of greenery.

Recently the formal invitation has been on the decline in my world. I imagine this is true across the developed world. It used to be that lovely invitations would arrive via regular mail, and there would be actual anticipation of getting the seal broken to feast your eyes on the invite. Now, it seems that the only people getting these embellished cards are celebrities. We mere mortals are relegated to the land of emailed invites, and I am strongly opposed to this demise.

If I could make one wish this year and see it fulfilled, it would be to see the return of the cardstock invitation. I want to live in a world that involves linen, raised calligraphy and hand painted art. Where I pick up my physical mail and come across an envelope that stands apart from the rest because my name is written in glitter ink, and the texture of the envelope is luxurious against my fingertips. And when I pull out the invitation sequins might fall out as I unfold the layer of tissue paper. Oh to be parted from those moments is such sweet sorrow to me. Join me, in a fight to revive the formal invitation.
